Dwight Ellis Holmes, FAIA was born and raised in the Carolinas, designing his first home for his family at the age of 16 in Charleston. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Architecture at Georgia Institute of Technology in 1960 and a Bachelor of Architecture at North Carolina State University in 1962.
Dwight spent his entire professional career in Tampa Bay, beginning in 1962 with nationally prominent Architect, Mark Hampton, FAIA. In 1972, he joined H. Dean Rowe, FAIA, in the establishment of Rowe Holmes Architects, which, in its twenty years, was the recipient of over 80 local, state, and national design awards and was featured in numerous professional journals and publications throughout the United States and in several foreign countries. In 2000 AIA Florida recognized Rowe Holmes Barnett Architects as the No. 1 firm in Florida during the 1980s.
In 1980, Dwight was the recipient of the Florida Central Chapter AIA Medal of Honor for Design Excellence, and in 1982, AIA Florida conferred upon him its highest honor for design, the Award of Honor. In 1983, he was advanced to the College of Fellows of The American Institute of Architects, a lifetime honor bestowed for notable contributions to the profession of Architecture. He was for twelve years a member of the National AIA Committee on Design and has served as chairman of its committee on awards & juries. Holmes lectured and served on design juries at schools of architecture at the University of Florida, University of South Florida, and Florida A&M University. He has been a speaker at National, State, and local AIA conferences and conventions.
From 1995 to 2009, Holmes was the senior principal of Holmes Hepner & Associates Architects who in 2002 was recognized as both the Tampa Bay/AIA and AIA/Florida” Firm of The Year”.
In July 2009, he relocated his practice to Indian Rocks Beach, Florida, and opened Holmes Architects with his son Scott Holmes.
